benniegoodsill asked:

I have been to a couple concerts recently and have noticed a cone on the side of the stage. It is a clear cone shaped device with some kind of metal spiraled around it. The big end of the cone (A foot or less in diameter) faced the stage. Does anyone know what this is?

Can you give me advice on upgrading my audio system in my car?

melissa13182 asked:

I have an older car (93 maxima) and the original owner put some audio equipment in it himself during the early 90’s.

It’s speakers work well enough to my standards, so I don’t want to replace them.

Inside my car I have a cassette player head unit that never worked well at all, and in the trunk I have a 6 CD changer that works decently as far as I know. I have a friend who unhooked entire system for reasons that equate a long story about my moving across country - let’s not go there.

How do I ask for what I am looking for without getting upsold? I’d like to keep the 6 CD changer and just get another head unit. Can I get that and have it installed and hooked up to my old equipment? Should I get another cassette player head unit? or a CD player? It doesn’t matter to me as long as it’s cheap, plays MP3’s and I can use the 6 disc CD changer I have in my trunk.

Help me from getting scammed.

Also, how much would you estimate total costs?

THANKS!

Tony

Audio Books The Way To Go From Now On

Graham Winmill asked:

There are so many book lovers all around the world that are crazy about reading books, but given the changing times and fast paced lifestyles that most people lead today, there may not always be enough time left at the end of the day to do some serious reading. The technology of today has brought radical changes to the way we perceive things and also how we do things, and with the onslaught of computerization and electronic gadgets, people don’t do things quite the same way as they did fifty years ago, and even before that.

Listen To Content Rather Than Read It

Now-a-days, you have things called audio books that allow you to listen to the content of the books rather than have to read them for yourself, which means that if you have appropriate equipment to play these audio books, you can continue doing your normal routine activities while having the books being read to you at the same time. It is thus little wonder that today, audio books in various formats have taken over our ways of thinking and people are finding them to be a more convenient and also effective means of “reading” their favorite novels, or other written material.

You can even pop your audio books on CDs or cassettes into a player while driving in your car or when on the go and listen to the content, and it is even possible to download audio books straight from the Internet in a jiffy and listen to them on your PC, iPod or Mp3 player provided you have fast Internet access.

The wonder of using audio books is that you are able to listen to the content rather than have to read them, and it is well known that if you listen, you will learn more and better. Thus, audio books are very much being used in education and of course, in literary works, and a lot more as well. The text is read out by professionals that have soothing voices, which makes the listening experience even better. In fact, with technologies such as MP3, the quality of sound has undergone rapid improvement that is even making audio books on CDs an outdated technology, and thus more and more people are switching over to using MP3 audio books that are sure to have superior audio quality.

You can easily listen to your audio books, even when you are driving in your car or in a public transport or when taking a walk and even in sports gyms, which makes them a more convenient option than having to read physical bound books, and because people generally cannot spare the time to read, and anyway because their mindset has undergone a sea change, audio books are the way to go from now on.

What do you look for in car audio equipment?

Gerald asked:

I like to think I’m fairly savvy when it comes to electronics, but audio equipment is not my thing, especially car stuff.

I’m looking to spend around $250 basically to upgrade the sound quality in my car. I want a new head unit or receiver, whatever its called, one with an aux input for my ipod. That is about it for the necessities.

I don’t know if I should blow through the whole $250 on that or if I would get more bang for my buck to get better speakers. I’ll let the experts weigh in on that dilemma.

As for the car, I drive a 1997 Audi A4 with standard factory equipment.

If you can help or just offer some insight into the world of electronic sound systems, please feel free to let me know. Thanks!

Audio Book Rentals - Convenient Entertainment on a CD

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Madonna Jeffries asked:

The advent of the audio book happened over 35 years ago in the early 1970’s. Initially the most common place where you found audio books was at the public library. Usually you could listen to the book only at the library where they had the necessary tape playing equipment. At the beginning these recordings were often of only average quality but within a few years, due to the growing popularity, many publishers began to produce much higher quality audio books.

As most public and municipal libraries had only modest resources to buy these audio books their catalog of available titles were initially quite small. To satisfy the public’s growing appetite for audio books, a large number of rental groups began to spring up everywhere offering a much wider range of titles.

Audio book rentals are akin to audio book clubs, but they are able to offer customers unlimited access to literally thousands of different audio books. Customers are offered the option of having their audio book rental on either a CD or tape. They can then select from a range of services where the hire rates can vary depending on the duration of the rental or by way the rented audio books are returned, for example by post or in person.

Audio Book Rentals - A Traveler’s Delight

Most people are already familiar with rental services, originally for videos and more so with DVDs these days. There are some quite interesting groups offering audio book rentals, one in particular has a fairly unique way in which it makes its service very user friendly. This company specializes in distributing its audio books to customers via travel centers located on most major American highways. Among its loyal customer base are truck drivers, sales persons as well as frequent travelers. Their concept is very clever as it allows you to rent the audio book at one place and return it at another travel center elsewhere in the country. For example, you could effectively rent a Stephen King novel in New York to listen to on your car CD player for the long drive to California and when you finish you just pop it into the nearest travel center.

This type of audio book rental service is particularly useful if you do not have access to the internet and cannot download the audio book you are interested in. Additionally audio book rentals can still be taken out in the old cassette format, something else you cannot get from a computer download.

One criticism of audio book rentals, however, is that some customers are unable to finish listening to the books that they have rented before they are due for return, unlike downloads which you can listen to at your leisure. Sometimes with audio book rentals there is also the problem of having to wait for copies of particularly popular books as not all rental agencies have the resources to stock multiple copies of certain titles. So if you are about to embark on a long journey why not pop down to your local travel center and check out their audio book rentals and when you have finished listening to it just drop it off at your destination.

What Kind Of Computer Recording Studio Equipment Do I Need To Make Professional Sounding Recordings

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Douglas Taylor asked:

Recording on your home computer has never been easier to do than it is today. With the speed of the modern day computer you can do some pretty neat things with your recordings. Modern technology will take you a long way toward success but you still need to understand what is going on if you want to have a great recording. It does not take all that much computer recording studio equipment to have a nice little setup.

To record on your computer you will need a few essential items. You must start out with a powerful computer that has a pretty decent soundcard. The next step is to go shopping for the software you need to actually get the sound inside your computer. You will find a decent set of headphones handy to have around and the most important thing you need is a good microphone. This article will take a look at these items and how they relate to home recording on a computer.

You cannot do much computer recording without a computer. Almost any modern day system will get the job done. The faster CPU and the more memory you have the better. Many people like to build a special computer just for recording purposes. This may be overkill if you only want to record one or two tracks at a time. Next you need to add a good soundcard or audio interface to your system.

There are many choices you can make when picking out a soundcard or external audio interface. You do not have to spend a lot of money to get a decent sound but usually the more expensive brands have some features that you may need. It is wise to search the Internet and forums to see what people are saying about the different soundcards before spending your hard earned money.

You will need to get some recording software to add to your computer recording studio equipment. There are many brands to choose from the free Audacity to programs costing a lot of money. If your recording needs are simple you can probably get by with one of the cheaper packages. On the other hand if you want to record a band you will probably need to spend a few more bucks on one of the more expensive software programs.

Add a microphone to this must have equipment list and you will almost be done. Get the best mike you can afford as the quality of this piece of equipment has much to do with the final sound of your project.

The last thing you will need to complete a basic set up is a set of headphones so you can hear what is being recording. Get a decent set but you can get by ok with a simple pair of headphones.

As you can see you do not have to spend a lot of money on computer recording studio equipment to get started recording on your home computer. Take your time and choose your equipment carefully and you will not have to go this again in 6 months when you have figured out that the cheap stuff you bought just is not getting the job done.

Audio Book Guide: How To Download and Listen to Audio Books

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Rolf Zimmerli asked:

Digital Audio Books are getting more popular by the day. Weekly, more digital media players are made available and consumers replace their old cassette and CD players with the modern MP3 players- These MP3 players are much smaller and can be loaded with many MegaBytes of content, music and audio books, even videos.

Audio Books are normally encoded in either MP3 or WMA format. Both formats can be played on PC’s, laptops and on Apple computers and most portable media players (MP3 players), like the iPod, Zune, iRiver, Samsung MP3 etc.

Here are a few tips that will help you making the right decisions, when buying your first audio book:

To download large files from the internet, it’s best to have a high speed broadband connection, it can speed up the download considerably. If you are on an slower - ISDN or analog - connection, downloading is still possible. It will just take a bit longer. I suggest you use a download manager to be able to pick up where you were interrupted, should the line go down.

The file size for audio books can vary considerably, depending on the file quality.

Usually audio books are made available by the publishers in several different compressions, making the files smaller. The most compressed format is usually of good, audible, but not excellent, quality, whilst the medium compression will be perfect for most users. The largest files usually provide better than CD quality and can be quite bulky. If you are not sure which format suits your ear most, download all three qualities for testing, then decide what is most convenient for you. When you then buy your next audio book, you’ll know what firle format to download.

The iPod has made media players popular, and a large number of iPods are used by old and young consumers. The questio I’m asked most often is: “Is it possible to transfer audio books to an iPod?”

My answer is a simple “Yes.” It’s a straightforward process: All you have to do is to burn the audio book files to CD first (this is a step we’d always recommend as it is wise to make a physical backup copy of anything you buy just in case your computer ever fails or is stolen) and then rip that CD straight into iTunes, from where it’s transferred to your iPod when you synchronize it.

Burning your audio book files to an audio CD on your computer is quick and easy, particularly if you are using Windows. If you are in doubt how to exactly proceed check for the help page. Audio book stores offer very detailed, step by step desciptions, often illustrated or even as videos, that will help you burn these files on CD.

“How can I test if my equipment will work with audio books” is an other question that is asked often. There is risk free way to find out:

Most audio book stores offer free audio books. So if you’re in doubt whether your system will be able to handle the files and whether the audio books are compatible with the equipment you own, just download one of the free books, and test it.

When you purchase an audio book, you often receive a user name and a password which allows you to download the files and prove that you are the rightful owner of these files. Like this you don’t run the risk of breaking the law. Such audio books have been licensed for sale and have been approved by the publishers and copyright holders. As a paying customer you are entitled to download and listen to these files as often as you wish and on whatever equipment you wish. You can also copy the audio books on CD as backup for yourself and your family. However, like for any other media, it would be illegal to make copies of the files and distribute them widely.

The length of time it will take for an audio book to download will vary greatly depending on what kind of Internet connection you have. Often the audio books are split into several smaller files or parts, especially if the recordings are several hours of listeing pleasure. If you have a broadband connection it will take just a few minutes per part. This makes it easier to download the book. Even if you are on a slow connection you can start listening to the first part whilst the other files are downloading.
