How To Create Podcast Media From Audio TapeThe digital revolution has rendered many of to a state of utter confusion when it comes to dealing with older/analog audio technologies. A good number of us are still utilizing the familiar old tape deck to record our audio, but then become absolutely befuddled when it comes time to transfer that audio into the digital environment. I always get this picture in my head of my clients standing there with RCA audio cables - staring blankly at their computer - wondering how to get the audio from the source to the destination. This tutorial is meant to help out those confused masses. I will preface the tutorial by saying that this is by no means the ideal way to create podcast media. However, people should stick to what they’re comfortable with. If that’s audio tape - then by all means - go for it! Maybe someday you’ll invest in a good MP3 recording device - but until then - it’s no biggie. So - let’s get started.Equipment/Hardware Needed

Standard Audio Cassette Player. I highly recommend using a good quality walkman - for it has the ideal output port on it built in. I do not recommend using your home stereo cassette deck for this procedure - because your deck most likely has either RCA outs (absolutely no good) and a 1/4″ plug (if you’re lucky.)

A 1/8″ to 1/8″ Mini Plug connector. You know the little plug connector that’s at the end of your headphones? This cable has two of those - one on each end. You can purchase these cables at pretty much any electronics store. (If you must use your home stereo deck - and if it comes with a 1/4″ plug jack - you can probably find a 1/4″ to 1/8″ adapter along with the cord.)

Good sound card for your computer with an “line in” jack (looks just like the audio out jack . If you’ve purchased your computer within the last few years - you most likely already have an audio card sufficient for this process.) Familiarize yourself with the location of the card, and find the “line in” jack.Software Needed

Audio Recording Software with noise-reduction filters. I recommend Audacity - as it’s free and pretty simple to use.Once you have all of the equipment, it’s time to get started.Transferring the audio from Tape to ComputerStep 1:Connect the tape deck to the computer by plugging one end of the connector cable into the headphones jack of the walkman, and the other end of the connector cable into the “line in” jack of your computer’s sound card.Step 2:Install your audio processing software (Audacity.)Step 3:Launch Audacity, and look for the input pulldown menu. It’s on the top right of the screen. Click the tab and select “Line In”.Step 4:Adjust the volume of your walkman to be medium/low. Rewind the tape and press Play.Step 5:Press “Record” in Audacity’s interface and check the levels of the audio being brought in. If the levels are too high (hot) your audio will be distorted. You will know if the audio is “hot” by if the levels trip too far to the right. If so, either adjust the volume from the walkman, or the audio input levels in the software to compensate.Step 6:After finding the perfect recording level, you’re ready. Rewind the tape again. Press “record” in audacity, and press “play” on your walkman.Step 7:Review your audio. If you’re happy with it, save it, and begin to tweak it with the noise reduction software.Step 8:Save your audio file as .mp3 format. You’re done! Now your audio is ready to be included/posted to your podcast. If you need a good podcast host I recommend AvMyPodcast.com. They have unmetered bandwidth, great tech support, and a lot of tutorials to teach you how to make a podcast.Good luck!

What is Brain/ear Reference When Listening an High End Audio System

rain/Ear Reference when listening an High End Audio System

Ozhan Atalay

We know that hearing and listening are two different facts. For instance if we don’t know Chinese, we will not understand if somebody speaking Chinese (Yes sure, yeah :-)) Not so much familiar people may confuse French versus Italian. By the same logic, as an example if we don’t know viola sound well, we may confuse it quite easily with a violin playing at upper octaves or with a cello playing at the lower octaves. If we are not so much familiar with a live acoustic sound of a violin, we can not identify which record or which equipment reproduces the most natural sounds.

Hearing happens 24 hours a day even in sleeping mode. Otherwise we wouldn’t be able to hear our alarm clock or screaming of our boy. Our brain scans every sound but rejects unimportant ones for the one. Brain does not only scan and select the sounds, but processes them actively. If a viola sound is heard, brain recalls the memory, compare with experiences and historical events and decide if it is viola or not. Listening, in other words can be described as active hearing. If brain does not participated to the process, it is called hearing but not listening.

Have you listened at your recorded voice? You liked it ? Was that similar to your voice or it was quite different. Everybody else will agree that it is your voice except you ! Our voice is transmitted to a listener directly via his/her ear but it is transmitted to us by internal vibrations as well as externally by ear, so sounds different. This is the brain reference. Brain reference for our voice is what we heard in our life.

Brain will decide if the sound is coming from piano or from a violin. The fact for such a judgement is our memory. If someone who did not listen piano in live acoustic concert properly, his brain reference for piano will be the one “was listened in a good hi-end system”, may be his own system. He will obviously distinguish the piano sound immediately but may not like it or may not find it realistic or natural. If this is the case, how do we choose our equipments and how we will realize which system or component is better ? Is the only way to trust Stereophile or Absolute Sound writers, I believe the key element is to attend live acoustic concerts (not amplified) as much as possible and locate to the performers as close as possible. This is a must to adjust our brain references.

A couple of examples are given here. A friend who visited us heard my daughter who was playing piano in her room, went to her room. He did not like the sound of the piano at all. He said that a piano can not be such a dark and dull. No inner details, no resolution nothing !! Our piano surely can not play at the same league with a long Steinway Sons but it is a live piano, live music and we are only few centimetres away. I know he likes such piano records that the mikes were located inside of the piano body and every inner timbre was recorded and boosted. Even the musician himself can not hear such details. His brain reference served him his memory of piano sounds and once he listened at a real piano, he found it unrealistic.

Years ago, when I commenced attending the regular concerts of Istanbul Symphony Orchestra, I found the sound do dull at that time. The sound was as if covered by a cloth. Mid and upper frequencies were not exist. Timpani and the big drum were kicked like hell but their sounds were not killing powerful. I got used to it in time and perceived the neutrality and the purity of the non coloured sounds. A couple of months ago I invited an audiophile friend who does not attend to acoustic concerts. He was shocked. He told that the entire orchestra was covered by something, there were no details and upper frequencies, and sound was so soft and gentle. He said that he can not perceive the violins, rustles of soprano, drums are not shaking the floor. We were located only at the 8.th raw. During the entire concert, he strived to find the reasons but never judged his brain references. It is obvious that we will not like our systems each other due to our expected sounds and brain reference points are different.

May be the last example; Years ago, we visited an audiophile friend for a long listening session. He is very good audiophile and very good music listener too. He used to have very good systems. We listened at mostly classics for hours and admired the sound of the system. When we wanted to try our own reference CD’s (Patricia Barbers, etc) his system sink and disappointed us. Actually we should have judged our own brain references but not the system. We had coloured our systems to achieve more details but estranged by neutrality.

We, most of the audiophiles make this fault unconsciously. We load our brain references with wrong information then accuse better systems, better equipments, and better sounds even better records. We don’t like the sounds of better systems, we can not come to an agreement or can not compromise on fundamentals due to our own particular brain references

Languages and Audio Bible Translations

Susan Slobac asked:

audio bible, download audio bible, greek audio bible, hebrew audio bible

For pastors and missionaries out in the field, it can be a challenge to become proficient enough in one or more native languages to be able to communicate and explain the Word of God. Everyone responds to their native language the best. If you are in a crowded room of people speaking several different languages, your ears will pick up on the ones speaking a language that you can understand and to which you can best relate. This is true when it comes to communicating the Word of God to others, and that is why the audio bible has revolutionized sharing God’s Word. No longer do you need to be a proficient speaker to share the love of God with others. The audio bible is translated into many different languages, this can be of great benefit when reaching across cultural boundries.

Translations of the audio Bible originate from the Bible Societies, Wycliffe Bible Translators and other groups that do Bible translations for people and groups who have never had their spoken language written down before. The terrible thing is that over half the world’s population cannot read, so that even if the Bible is translated into the appropriate languages, often it cannot be utilized by the people who have no other way to come into effective contact with it. Audio Bibles offer an effective solution to this dilemma.

This is offset by new technologies offering teachers, pastors and missionaries the ability to download audio Bible files in mp3 CD formats. The Bible has been recorded in audio format in 260 different languages, and is available for languages spoken on every continent.

Getting equipment to work properly out in the field is always a challenge to missionaries who are working in third-world countries. Unreliable or nonexistent electrical sources can make running electronic equipment in the field not something you can count on regularly. However, with the advent of electronic audio technologies that can be run on solar-powered batteries, this opens up a whole new world of possibilities for missionaries far out in areas not regularly serviced with utilities like electricity. A playback device that can play mp3CDs can make you life much easier, and make your ministry more effective as native speakers hear the language they understand, and come closer to a relationship with God.

Language learners who are trying to learn foreign languages, such as Bible scholars needing to study Greek and Hebrew, will find the Greek audio Bible and the Hebrew audio Bible very helpful tools. You can grab your Greek New Testament or Hebrew Old Testament Bible, pop the appropriate audio Bible CD into your player, and listen to the Greek or Hebrew being spoken as you read along in those languages. This is another way to increase your skill in language understanding, as well as Bible knowledge.

How To Conquer Exercise Equipment Boredom

Kevin Sinclair asked:

Can you remember how excited you were when you got your new and shiny exercise equipment? You were so wrapped up with it all you promised yourself you would use it every single day. But it did not take long for you to be sick and tired of pedaling or walking and getting nowhere and the very thought of exercising now fills you with dread. Well, do not despair. There are ways to make your workouts more interesting and here are a few tips of how to do just that.

First of all, put some music on. This will help to raise your enthusiasm. Let’s face it, there is nothing like an upbeat tune to get you moving. You can always warm up and cool down to slow tunes and build up to a crescendo for the main part of your training. For a variation of music simply listen to your favorite CD or tune into your local radio station.

If music is really not your thing you could try audio books. They can be a great way to pass the time whilst exercising. You never know, you may even begin to look forward to your exercising sessions if you are really enjoying the book!

Another way to get on with your workout is to watch the television at the same time. Exercise whilst watching your favorite show or stop and start a movie over a period of a few days and you will soon settle down to regular workouts again. A good idea is to make the TV out of limits except for when you are exercising - this is sure to give you the motivation you need.

You can use the time during your fitness regime to catch you on your phone calls. Of course, you would need to wear a head set to do this. It also helps if the person on the other end of the phone knows you are exercising - just so they know what all the heavy breathing is about!

If you are fortunate enough to have a great view from the windows of your house, then why not do your workout in a position where you can gaze outside? Looking at the scenery or watching the wildlife is sure to distract you from the tedium of exercise.

While you are performing your exercise, try a little meditation. Focus on your body and clear your mind. You will appreciate the way you move more and become aware of your form. Exercising your body and your mind at the same time has great benefits.

Your workout is a great time for brainstorming. Make a note on paper (but not whilst you are on the treadmill, obviously!) of any ideas which come to mind about things you need to do or solutions to current problems you are facing.

There are specially designed desks available to accommodate your laptop whilst using exercising equipment and although you would probably not be able to do much typing, you could do tasks such as checking your emails or looking at websites.

So, there is no reason to allow your exercise equipment to become obsolete because you are bored with it. It’s up to you to make your workouts interesting once more.
