What are the basic equipment of a home audio system setup?

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009
thomasthefool asked:

preamp, amp, receiver, watts over speaker limit, under speaker limit, subwoofer

What are all these things. What’s the difference between an amp and a preamp? Is a receiver an amp with a radio tuner (with a preamp as well?) ?

What happens when you go over the speaker’s watt limit? Do you blow the speaker?

I’m not making this up, but there was some article that said if you go under the wattage of a speaker That could Actually DAMAGE your speaker saying it’s unconventional wisdom but true.

Is it necessary to get a subwoofer? If you don’t get a subwoofer, do your speakers do the work?

Pardon my language but HOW THE HELL are you going to choose a good pair of speakers when there are an infinite number of brands all purporting to be high class?

Thanks that’s all I can think of?

Car Audio Amplifier Testing. What equipment?

Kenson asked:

I need to know what equipment i need to test efficiency of an amplifier, I know i need dummy loads, a power invertor and oscilliscope. Where is a good place to get the resistors and what are some well regulated power supplies that have selectable voltage (12.5, 13.8, 14.4, etc.), I was looking at VELLEMAN HPS10 for an oscilliscope, seems pretty straightforward to use and I really don’t feel like dropping thousands on the equipment. Thanks all! -Kenson

what is the law, regarding recording someone, whether audio or video?

Saturday, January 17th, 2009
snafu1 asked:

So how come there are laws saying you cannot record someone, whether it’s with audio equipment or video equipment? What if you have a webcam monitoring your property? is it legal? What if you have a digital camera, and are walking around town, taking videos and pictures? is it legal? What if you video record, while walking in a somewhat bad area at night, to protect yourself? What if you take it to work, to catch someone doing something bad to you, or to the company?

How to recoup audio equipment sent for repair out of state?

Thursday, January 8th, 2009
woodumined asked:

I sent a Nachamichi 1000ZXL cassette deck to a man in Arizona to be repaired. I paid his upfront fee of $350 for the service. After the first year, he excused his delays on family problems. After that, he stopped replying to my phone messages. Another year went by until I decided to hire a private investigator to do some digging. The private investigator required that I send him a letter for him to act on my behalf. I did. A week later I get a call from the PI that he was able to recover my cassette deck, but it was given to him in pieces. He also mentioned that some parts were missing, in addition to the original packing material. After a short conversation with the PI, he agreed to deliver the items to a pack-and-ship company to wrap, box, and deliver the items back to me. He also said he would call me from that location to allow me to use my credit card for the shipping service. I now get no replies from the PI! The value of the cassette deck new was ~$3500. I live in NC.

Does it hurt audio equipment (cables, microphones, effects pedals, etc.) to be in the car during cold weather?

Thursday, January 8th, 2009
David L asked:

I play music a lot professionally, I have a tub of cables I usually leave in my car. It generally holds two microphones and a couple of effects pedals, along with numerous cables and incidentals. I leave this in my back-seat pretty much all the time.

I would not ever leave one of my amps in the car or my PA head, but I do leave the tub of cables. In the winter it gets pretty cold in the South (not usually really freezing but cold) and in the summer it gets really hot. Am I risking my gear by leaving it in the car 24-7?

Thanks!!!
