snafu1 asked:
So how come there are laws saying you cannot record someone, whether it’s with audio equipment or video equipment? What if you have a webcam monitoring your property? is it legal? What if you have a digital camera, and are walking around town, taking videos and pictures? is it legal? What if you video record, while walking in a somewhat bad area at night, to protect yourself? What if you take it to work, to catch someone doing something bad to you, or to the company?

in Australia its illegal, you must get someones permission to do so, if you are taking a picture or someone or something and their are others in the background then that is fine if it is for personal uses only. other than that then you must get their con cent. in some cases you may need a signature by the person saying that they are allowing you to do so. if taking it to work to catch someone or something, is still illegal, the evidence will not be able to stand up in a court as you have taken it illegally…hope i helped.

The laws vary by state, and also distinguish between recording audio, video or both and by the type of recording and the place in which it is made.
So, when you ask “what is the law” - the first question that must be decided is where.

in the US, it’s legal as long as you are not on someone elses property!
