What audio equipment do I need to film a movie outdoors for long periods of time?

audio equipment
Joel asked:

I will be going on a camping trip and need information / resources for getting pro sound on the fly. I will be nowhere near a power source..

I already have the mics and whatnot.. I just need to know portable audio capturers (whatever they are called) that can record from serveral different microphones.

Battery life / durability = important.

Thank you so much!
This will be video and audio. Recording them both onto the tape is a BIG nono. I need a way to record the audio separately.

Is this audio to go along with the film? Actually film or video?

If it’s video, use digital, a good camera, and record the audio there, it’s very high quality.

If you’re recording audio only, look into portable digital recorders like a portable DAT, hard disk, or compact flash based system.

I’m just concerned, how come you already ‘have the mics and whatnot’ but don’t know anything about the right recorder? For good audio, the challenge is picking the right microphone (and the right one, like a Sennheiser MK416, would cost you more than the recorder).
Go with a DAT recorder or a MiniDisc, or if you’re feeling retro, a Nagra - heavy and bulky, but *extremely* reliable.
Actually, the best for you would probably a solid-state recorder. Low in battery, very durable, and excellent quality. Something like a Nagra ARES BB or a Sound Devices 744T, an industry favorite.
Check out these links: (Fostex FR-2LE for $600, Marantz PMD660 for $500)=%27Portable%27/sf=prod_group/se=%27Recorders%20%26%20Players%3A%20Digital%27/sf=for_sale/se=0/sf=used/se=1/sf=statuss/se=%27n%27/ml=9999.html

Even if this is outside price range, it’ll give you a good idea what to look for, and these sites are great resources. Don’t forget you can rent…
